Using Storage Between Moves: What to Prepare Before Your Belongings Go Away

The date you leave one home does not always match the date you can move into the next. Storage can help bridge that gap. It can also be useful during renovation work or when you need more time to decide what will fit in your new home.

Before collection, think about what you are storing, what you will need while it is away and how delivery back to you will work. These decisions are just as important as the amount of space required.

Decide what needs to stay with you

Make a separate list of the things you will need during the storage period. Keep documents, keys, work equipment, everyday clothing and household essentials with you. Think about seasonal items too if the storage period could last longer than expected.

Explain your access needs before choosing the service. Polish Man & Van offers containerised storage as a non-access option, with return delivery arranged in advance. It is important to plan around that arrangement rather than expect to visit a container whenever you need something.

Prepare a useful inventory

List the furniture and boxes that will go into storage. A simple room-by-room inventory makes it easier to explain the volume and identify anything needing special attention. Include belongings from outside the main living areas, such as garden furniture and boxes in the loft.

Number the boxes and keep a copy of your list. For example, a label such as 'Kitchen 03 - serving dishes' gives you more information than 'Kitchen' on its own. Tell the moving team about unusually large, delicate or valuable items when arranging the quote.

Agree the packing and collection arrangements

Ask what packing and preparation are included in the service. Discuss furniture that may need dismantling, the materials needed for delicate items and who will carry out each part of the work. If you are preparing any items yourself, follow the storage provider's instructions.

Items should be clean and dry before they are packed away. Check the provider's rules about what can be stored before collection, especially if you are unsure about anything in a garage or shed. Keep labels visible and avoid closing boxes before you have agreed how items requiring specialist attention should be handled.

Plan for changes and return delivery

Give an estimated storage period, but explain if your next moving date is uncertain. Ask how extensions, charges and notice for delivery are handled. Confirm what the quote includes, including collection, packing and eventual delivery, so you understand the full service.

As your new address and date become clearer, contact the team to arrange delivery. Share access details for the destination, including stairs, lifts and parking. If you expect to need only part of your belongings first, discuss whether that is possible and what it involves before storage begins.

Storage support for London households

Whether you are leaving a flat in Battersea, renovating in Wandsworth or moving elsewhere in London, the same preparation applies. Tell Polish Man & Van what you need to store, when collection is required and whether your delivery date is known. We can discuss how storage fits alongside your move.
